Gann HiLo Activator Pro is the advanced version of the widely used Gann HiLo Activator, originally introduced by Robert Krausz. 

This useful technical analysis indicator helps traders quickly identify market trends and potential reversal points, providing a more precise foundation for trading decisions.

What is Gann HiLo Activator?

The Gann HiLo Activator is based on the highest highs and lowest lows of previous periods, creating a trend-following line on your chart. 

Unlike other indicators that only consider the current period, the Gann HiLo Activator calculates based on N previous periods using the Gann HiLo Activator formula:

For example, with N = 10:

• Highest High: The highest price in the last 10 periods
• Lowest Low: The lowest price in the last 10 periods

The result is a trend-following line that reflects recent price ranges while smoothing out short-term noise. As a Gann HiLo indicator, it allows you to monitor market momentum and potential turning points effectively.

How to trade with Gann HiLo Activator

• Trend identification:
  • Price closes above the HiLo Activator → bullish trend
  • Price closes below the HiLo Activator → bearish trend

• Entry signals:
  • Buy Signal: Price closes above the HiLo Activator line.
  • Sell Signal: Price closes below the HiLo Activator line.

• Dynamic Stop Loss:
  Its line moves with the trend, allowing you to use it as a trailing stop, protecting profits during reversals.
• Combined with other tools:
  The Gann HiLo indicator is often used alongside trend filters, RSI, MACD, or support/resistance levels to confirm signals. On Renko or bar charts, the indicator helps filter out market noise effectively.

Key upgrades of Gann HiLo Activator Pro

The Gann HiLo Activator enhances the traditional Gann HiLo Activator by introducing two adaptive calculation modes – Moving Median and Moving Average – along with an advanced Offset Filter for noise reduction. 

These upgrades give you more control when working across different market environments.

1. Moving Median Mode: Calculates the median of highs and lows over N periods, smoothing out extreme price movements.

• Benefits:
  • Resistant to flash spikes or sudden market anomalies
  • Produces a smooth, stable trend line, highlighting the true market trend
  • Ideal for volatile markets or sudden price jumps
• Consideration:
  • Reacts slower than MA mode, as the median filters extreme fluctuations

2. Moving Average (MA) Mode: Calculates the trend line based on the moving average of recent highs and lows.

• Benefits:
  • Closely tracks current prices, providing fast trend response
  • Helps traders easily spot entry and exit points in clear trending markets
• Consideration:
  • More prone to noise from flash spikes or sudden market moves
  • Best suited for stable, low-volatility markets

3. Offset Filter 

The Gann Hilo indicator includes an Offset Filter, allowing you to define how much price must move before a shift in direction is considered meaningful. This prevents the trend line from flipping due to minor fluctuations or micro pullbacks.

  • Helps maintain trend consistency during choppy or range-bound phases
  • Lets traders customize sensitivity based on market volatility

Gann HiLo Activator Pro vs Moving Average

The Gann HiLo Activator calculates its values based on the highest highs and lowest lows over N periods using the Gann HiLo Activator formula. This approach allows it to reflect the price range of recent highs and lows, making it especially effective at capturing true market trends. 

In contrast, a Moving Average (MA) calculates the average of closing prices over N periods, providing a smoother line that represents the general price direction rather than the extremes.

When it comes to sensitivity, the Gann HiLo indicator – particularly in Moving Median mode – is less affected by flash spikes or abnormal price movements, producing a more stable trend line. The MA, however, can be distorted by extreme price movements, as it reacts to every closing price equally.

In terms of reaction speed, the MA mode of the Gann HiLo Activator tracks price closely and responds quickly to changes, while the Moving Median mode offers smoother, slightly slower signals. A traditional Moving Average provides a consistent, smooth line but may lag behind sudden trend changes.
